A good gaming MB

Pros Great features. Stable. All the ports I need. Fun to overclock.
Cons The TurboV connector is difficult and delicate to unplug.

The over voltage switches don't seem practical.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line: A rewarding experience to start most computer designs with.
There is an abundant of information out there on this board and I’ll try to comment on things I was mostly concerned with.

The P7P55D Deluxe has an abundance of features and is good for gamers. The over clocking features are a significant part of the design. The number of SATA ports is great. The 3 SATA connectors on top of the board can be used for single hard drives but they will be about 5% slower than the 6 primary SATA ports.

There have been questions concerning the SATA hard drive speeds but a friend claims high SATA speeds using a solid state primary hard drive. Then of course the board offers the RAID configuration for faster hard drive speeds. I get good SATA speeds using my hard drives but I do not have a reliable hard drive testing program.

I have achieved 3.591 GHz using the ASUS software automatic settings and an Intel i7 860 microprocessor. I do not know the proper settings to maintain stability at 3.5 GHz. From the BIOS I got about 3.5GHz but prefer to use the TurboV remote control where I switch amongst 2.8, 3.0 and 3.2 GHz. With those settings turned off the board goes to a slow idle speed and the rear fan turns off. It is still fast enough for word processing and Internet. Higher settings are possible but it is tricky and I’ll wait for further ASUS software updates to make over clocking easier. The latest software updates as of 11/30/2009 are OK to make things work but further updates will be desirable as with any new motherboard. I use a Nvidia EVGA GeForce GTX 295 video card. The best video games can run with all features turned on and 2048 x 1152 resolution with incredible frame rates. Gaming is a dream.

There are concerns about memory speed when all 4 slots are filled with 8GBs. My testing found no difference in RAM speed between 4 GB and 8GB. I got close to 1600MHz with both configurations.

There is the concern over the motherboards that have 6 RAM slots for 12GBs of RAM but all tests I’ve seen show the 4 slot motherboards to be as fast.

The TurboV remote control plugs directly into the motherboard using a very small plug. The fit is very tight. It is easy to damage the plug while removing it. The plug and TurboV remote are not replaceable. Be extremely careful here. I would advise a little silicone lubricant on the plug so it can be removed easier.

The over voltage switches on the motherboard are questionable since voltage adjustments can be made with software.

I am particular and will return a motherboard without hesitation. I find this to be a dependable product and will keep it. Designing a new computer takes a lot of homework so make sure you have all the right components. This motherboard is a good starting place.
