Great card... but...
Pros
Great performance for current games.
Cons
Not the best value card currently. Future games will run poorly on this.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
It's a solid card, but with current prices, the X800 XL offers better value and performance. If you're looking for a card to run future games, look for a 7800.
... it's starting showing its age with newer games.
Originally I bought this card for Half-Life 2 and I was definitely satisfied with the performance. I have a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz with 1.5 GB of DDR400 memory and I was basically able to play Half-Life 2 smoothly (~60 frames per second) with these settings:
1280x1024; 2x AA; 8x AF; high settings.
I also play games like Unreal Tournament 2004, GTA3: Vice City, Doom 3, Sims 2, Splinter Cell 3: CT with these settings and basically all of them ran without a fuss. In Doom 3 and Splinter Cell 3, however, I have to turn down the resolution to 1024x768 for a smooth gameplay with high settings on.
When I play demos like Call of Duty 2 and F.E.A.R., my system struggles a bit with high settings with the resolution set to 1024x768, resulting in a more choppier gameplay, but still it was playable just not as smooth as my current games. It runs around 25 to 40 frames per second.
For the price right now, it's better to get a RADEON X800 XL card, it's faster than the RADEON X800 Pro and more likely to be cheaper. If you're a Doom 3 fan you should try to find a 6800 GT or even a 6600 GT if you're really tight on the budget. The RADEON X800 Pro won't run smoothly on high quality for future games like Call of Duty 2 or F.E.A.R., if you want to play those games smoothly, you probably want to fork out the extra cash and buy and 7800 GT or above for that.
