Great little computer!

bykabuk1 Jul 15, 2009
Pros Size, specs, speed, sturdiness, PRICE!
Cons Sound quality, no optical drive, no bluetooth
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This netbook is an EXCELLENT value. It is a full fledged, highly portable computer for under $300!
I just bought a blue Acer Aspire One 2 days ago, and I love it. It is a full fledged computer for under $300, and you cannot beat that. It's small, light, attractive, and packs lots of features.

I found it to be fast & stable, with great battery life. The 1.6 Ghz Intel Atom processor is snappy & capable. With current battery technology, laptops are lucky to get 2 hours of battery life. I average almost 4 hours on the 3-cell battery, and I advise everyone to condition their battery with a few full charge/discharge cycles to maximize battery life. The screen is crisp & bright, and the HD size(160 gb) is more than enough space for most people. The 1 gig of ram is perfectly adequate for Win XP, and it is expandable up to 2 gigs. My favorite feature is the multi-card reader. I have no fewer than a gazillion sd cards lying around, and I love not having to use an adapter. The keyboard is a little cramped, but still perfectly usable. The build quality feels superb- it feels sturdier than the $1800 Sony Vaio I had a few years ago. There are THREE USB ports! Take that, MacBook Air. There are ports for a secondary monitor & a network cable, as well as headphone & microphone plugins. Video playback is beautiful. WiFi works flawlessly, and picks up a usable signal from my neighbor's router :P

The only things I DIDN'T like were;

Lack of bluetooth, though I've heard this is an option on other models.

Location of the arrow keys- it leads to lots of mispresses. I hit the shift key all the time when trying to hit the up key.

The speakers are on the underside & the volume does not get loud enough, which leads to poor audio quality & lots of muffling. They should have located the speakers on top of the battery area.

The underside tends to get pretty warm after a while, which kinda worries me.

There is only one ram slot, so to upgrade to 2 gigs means you have to buy a 2 gig stick.

The track pad is just a little jumpy at times, and the scroll function doesn't always kick in.

There is no CD drive- which for someone like me is not an issue, I can count on one hand how many times I've had to use a CD drive in the past year, but for other people it could be an issue.

Overall though, it is an excellent little netbook, and I love it to death.
