Antec Attache Pass-Through Scanner
Pros: Durability, no external power required, portability, cheap, light weight. Comes with case.
Cons: Skews, clearing jams is scarey. PCMCIA rather than USB. Full review I have had this scanner for at least 4 years now. I bought it at Fry's for about $65.00. I travel every week with the Attache stuck in my laptop bag. It has been through most every airport in the country and thousands of miles bungied on the back of my Harley. I have worn out 2 Jansport backpacks and am on the second Dell Latitude since purchasing this scanner. I hate to carry paper on the road with me since my backpacks have weighed as much as 40 lbs. at times. It is also difficult to share hard copy documents on the road without a printer. Now I just scan paper and save it as a PDF or a JPG. I can also fax hard copy directly from my laptop. I have scanned friends pictures for myself and all I have to do to share all of these files is move them around on the network, thumbdrive, or disk rather than printing them out. I love the small size, the fact that there are no transformers (It runs off of PC power delivered by the PCMCIA card), and ease of use. It seems kind of flimsy but I have been very surprised how it has held up over the years. It does have a tendency to skew if you don't load it carefully. I was scanning a foil sticker for a rebate on something I bought while I was on the road and the glue left a streak on the LED array. This caused streaks on every document I scanned after that. I thought it was ruined. I finally took it apart and cleaned the array with 409 and it is ok now. I am amazed to see that this scanner is still being sold. I have used it only on Dell Latitudes. One was running 98 and the current PC is running 2000. |
