Full review

After buying a regular Western Digital hard drive, it turned me into a backup saving nut. The regular hard drive I have is good, but for portability I couldn’t take it anywhere I want. Plus with the extra adapter I would have to plug into, it would be a real problem if there were no outlets. I have computer classes and the files we use are massive so those tiny 2 gb or even 4 gb flash drives would run out of space quick for me. I had considered for a long while on getting an 8 gb flash drive but comparing the price I thought it worth my money by getting something that holds 30 times more and paying just 50 bucks extra.

With 250 gb of space it’s plenty of room for my digital files, and even more I can store hundreds of hours of video to bring with me. It’s fairly light, weighing around 4 oz. and measures 3”x5”. There is no burden of carrying an extra adapter. The cover does scratch up pretty quick; I had not realized this until I pulled it out from my bag. I would suggest buying a case for extra protection. But for the 2 months that I had it, it is pretty durable and it was still working very well, that’s with a lot of books crushing on top of it and a lot of shoveling into different bags. I DO NOT recommend doing that to your hard drive. It was a dumb thing on my part.

The portable hard drive is very quiet and hardly makes a sound. You do feel a little rumble when the device is running but that goes away quick. It heats up but not so much so that it’ll fry your hands. For USB 2.0 is has a very fast transferring rate, but depends on your computer. It has a software to sync with PCs (but not with Macs) so you can set it up to automatically save whatever you want. The cable length is very short approx. 12’’ which is a downer and can be best placed next to you.

NOTE: Before buying!

The downside is I have heard for older computers might read the portable hard drive. It uses a lot of power from the USB port. If your computer or laptop limits power to your USB port at 500 mAmp then it will not work.
2.0 USB should be fine but to be on the safe side the box recommends buying an extra dual USB cable aka Y-cable (plugs into 2 USB ports instead of one) I find that computers that are a maximum of 2 years old can read this hard drive but I’m not quite sure, I don’t know the specific technical details. I’ve tried this on my school’s HP desktop computer (which is roughly around 2 years old since 2006) and my own Toshiba laptop (which is a couple months old since 2007) and did not have any problems whatsoever. I know for certain that it works on Windows XP and Vista.

Now I use my portable hard drive even more then my regular one. With its small size I can easily plug it into my laptop and move around the house without the hassle of the extra adapter. I use it to store files that I would need quick access to and files that I would need on the go at school. The regular hard drive would just be for back files that I want to store long term, like music and videos.

For this particular device I recommend getting it at a store like Best Buy or Circuit City. They usually have it on sale and if something ever happens to it, you can return it easier.

Price: $120 (Don’t buy any higher then this price, it’ll be a rip off)
